Wavell State High School offers a program that is very well established and has a reputation as one of the best in Queensland. Our Instrumental Music Program continues the development of student’s musical abilities that have been acquired during their primary school years. They partake in weekly lessons on their musical instrument taught by specialist teachers. Students also participate in many school ensembles available at their level of expertise – Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Big Band, Concert Band, Wavell Winds, Stage Band, Percussion Ensemble, Drumline, Junior String Orchestra and Senior Chamber Strings.

Students with an interest in singing are encouraged to audition for the excellent vocal groups who support and participate in our music performances. The school Bands and Ensembles have a strong tradition of performance at school functions and community events. These performance opportunities include Remembrance Ceremonies through our strong affiliation with Kedron-Wavell RSL, Creative Generations, Fanfare, MOST, community festivals and our affiliation with Young Conservatorium, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Youth Orchestra and the Jazz Music Institute. Bi-annually our premiere Band undertake a tour, with itineraries as varied as Tasmania, outback and Northern Queensland, Sydney, Melbourne and New Zealand.

Select musicians are also chosen to perform in the pit for the bi-annual school musicals. Past musicals successes have included ‘Grease’, ‘Fame’, ‘The Wiz’ and ‘Bye, Bye Birdie’. The program has been established by dedicated specialist teachers. They are supported by a strong parent group who meets once a month to plan functions and fundraising. Showcase Concerts are always well patronized allowing our Ensembles to perform to a parent audience and are always an enjoyable evening.

Year 11 and 12 Instrumental Students are eligible for extra points towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) if they are studying Level 7 or higher of the Music Curriculum. They must fulfil assessment requirements and complete 55 hours of contact time per year.

Wavell State High School is proud of the continued excellence produced by our students under the direction of the Instrumental Music Instructors, and the very high standard of the Instrumental Music Program. Parent information evenings are conducted during the year on what we offer in Instrumental Music, or you can contact the Director of Instrumental Music for more information.
