The school takes part in a wide range of recreational and competitive sports, with the emphasis on maximum participation and enjoyment. We are proud of the high participation rate of our students in interschool sport and of the level of sportsmanship of our students. In the junior school students participate in sport on a Tuesday afternoon.
They have a choice of both interschool and recreational endeavours. The senior school participate on a Wednesday afternoon. Students in year 10 may choose from recreational or interschool sport, year 11 and 12 students may choose interschool sport or tutorials. Some of the sports offered are:
- Interschool: Australian Rules, Basketball, Cricket, Netball, Rugby League, Soccer, Softball, Touch Football, Volleyball.
- Recreational: Basketball, Netball, Soccer, Touch Football, Volleyball.
Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics carnivals are key events in the Wavell sporting calendar. We hold full school events where participation is encouraged. Students proudly represent their houses of Alamein, Burma, Keren and Tobruk during these intraschool competitions. They are also provided with opportunities to progress through the representative pathway of district and regional carnivals. Wavell State High School teams have shown excellent results at district carnivals consistently being named champion school.
Wavell is part of Central District Sport and the Metropolitan North region. Students are offered an opportunity to trial for a broad range of sports with pathways through to National level. In recent years, Athletics, Rugby League, Netball, Basketball, Swimming and Touch have been well represented by our school. We have a proud history of students who have represented at this level with 100 regional participants in consecutive years and the school being awarded Metropolitan North Sporting School of the year in 2019.
