  • Our Rugby League Program of Excellence has a rich history of fostering the development of aspiring professional athletes, alongside their academic studies. By leveraging the power of Rugby League to promote high standards and performance outcomes, our program empowers students to become positive young players on and off the field, while also providing them with promising post-schooling pathways. Our program has access to a rich network in the professional sporting space, and over 40 alumni having made their debut in the National Rugby League and NRLW competitions. This in combination with direct connections to key employers within industry, provides our students the best possible pathway to post-graduation employment opportunities.

Through a combination of timetabled classes and practical exercises, our students gain valuable life skills that extend far beyond the realm of sport. They learn how to work collaboratively as a team, cultivate a positive culture, and commit themselves to achieving their goals, setting themselves up for success in all areas of life.

Students within our Rugby League Program of Excellence will have access to the following:

    Program Benefits

    Curriculum

Students within our programs will have access to three curriculum lessons per week with qualified coach studying pre-season fitness, rugby league specific skills and strength and conditioning sessions as well as ACARA approved theory components aligned with curriculum band plans.

Our year 7-10 age groups will link with the Health and Physical Education subject within the Australian Curriculum, whilst our Year 11 and 12 senior group will study within the Sport and Recreation QCCA syllabus.

    Partnership with Inspire Health Services

    Physiotherapy Triage

The Wavell sporting excellence programs are now offering free physiotherapy triage three lunch times a week, courtesy of Inspire Health Services. This is open to all students enrolled within both Rugby League and Netball programs and take place in the schools HPE first aide room near the oval. Four appointments of 15-minute intervals are available on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunchtimes 1:00-2:00pm. This provides opportunity for students to be assessed on any injury concerns, to better inform further decisions around treatment required or altered training plans.

Notes will be given to your child during the session and are to be taken home for communicative purposes. Phone contact will also be made with parents directly from the physio if further treatment is required.

Triage is an assessment-based practice and serves the purpose of identifying key physical trauma that may require additional follow up and treatment. You may find that your child is issued with a request to attend the clinic for further analysis/ongoing treatment which will incur cost.

    Nutrition Education

Our students participate in Nutrition Education sessions facilitated by Inspire Health Services to inform better decision making for our students and families which contribute towards better performance outcomes both on the field and in the classroom.

Inspire Health Services provide supportive resources for our students and families to access to assist in the transfer of information from our sessions, into positive selections in lunchbox and meal choices.

    Strength and Conditioning

Inspire Health Services provide qualified and expert Strength and Conditioning coaches to facilitate strength and fitness training programs for our students across the year. Inspire Health Services and Rugby League staff sit down to ensure appropriate planning and programming is made to inform the best possible performance outcomes for our athletes.

Each year level has individualised training programs specific to Rugby League to ensure our students understand Fundamental Movement Patterns in the Foundation Years (7-8), to ensure that as our athletes progress through Development (9-10) and Specialist (11-12) years, they are building on strong foundations to achieve high levels of strength and performance required to compete at the elite level.

    Top Tier Competitions

All age groups and genders will have access to Elite Tier 1 Broncos Challenge competitions which provides opportunity for NRL recruitment exposure. These competitions run across terms 2 and 3 and feature the highest performing Rugby League programs across Queensland.
