The Wavell Enrichment Program, or WEP, provides selected Year 7 students the opportunity to improve their literacy and numeracy skills through a program designed to assist them to “catch up” academically with their peers.

How do we identify the students?

All year 7 students undertake English (PAT R) and Maths (PAT M) testing at the beginning of the year. Students are considered for the program once these results, together with analysis of their Year 5 NAPLAN results, Year 6 English and Maths results is undertaken. Eligible students then undergo a further Middle Years Ability Test, leading to those students who would benefit from the program being offered a place.

Participating students will no longer attend other language classes (Japanese, French or German), instead attending two WEP lessons each week, which will be reflected in their updated timetable.

What happens in WEP?

Over the year students participate in an interesting and diverse program, designed to guide them from basic grammar and maths towards more challenging concepts. Students may be placed with a tutor who will guide and assist them at their own pace. The WEP classroom (N21) environment provides the students with a calm, safe and supportive place to learn.

Literacy

The literacy program covers grammar and punctuation, oral comprehension (listening), reading comprehension, writing and general knowledge covering a broad range of interesting topics and special events. All work is completed and recorded in the student’s workbook. Reading is encouraged and practiced each lesson.

Numeracy

The maths program commences with basic multiplication tables and progresses to more challenging concepts over the year. Again, all work is completed and recorded in each individual student’s workbook.

Who are our Tutors?

Our tutors are members of the community who volunteer their time to help our WEP students. Each student will have the opportunity to work ‘one on one’ with a tutor as often as possible. We welcome new tutors to our program every year.
