What is Vocational Education and Training? (VET)

What do I get?

  • A Certificate upon successful completion.  
  • ​A Statement of Attainment that lists modules completed.
  • Credit towards the Queensland Certificate of Education - QCE. 
    • Certificate I - 2 or 3 credits - no partial completion
    • Certificate II - 4 credits towards QCE - partial completion recognised
    • Certificate III or IV - 5 to 8 credits towards QCE depending on the certificate – partial completion recognised

QCE Credit & Duplication of Learning

Applied subjects and VET Qualifications

Applied subjects and Certificate II VET qualifications that have similar subject matter and learning goals (as determined by QCAA) are considered duplication of learning as outlined in the following table. Therefore, QCE credits are not awarded for all learning.

VET Induction

All students are required to complete a VET induction.

A VET Induction explains what you need to know about your studies and includes such things as:

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
  • How your course will be conducted
  • Work Experience requirements
  • Grievance procedures - What to do if you are not happy.

Support Services

Students who normally obtain support from the Wavell Support Centre can continue to do so. All other students will have to rely on regular in-class teacher support.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The school RTO Wavell State High School is committed to providing all students with a fair and accessible process for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). The process acknowledges the skills, knowledge, performance outcomes and learning achieved prior to undertaking a program of study with Wavell State High School RTO.

Through the collection and submission of a portfolio of evidence and discussion with Wavell State High School trainers and assessors, students may apply to have their existing knowledge and skills assessment against the units of competency contained in a program offered. The units of competency are listed in the Student Curriculum Handbook and on the school website under Vocational Education. 

Complaints and Appeals Procedures

Wavell State High School, as an RTO, has a complaints and appeals policy specific to its RTO operations.

A complaint can be made to the school RTO regarding the conduct of:

• the school RTO, its trainers, assessors or other school RTO staff 

• students of the RTO

• any third parties providing services on behalf of the school RTO (if relevant).

An appeal can be made to the school RTO to request a review of a decision, including assessment decisions.

The school RTO will ensure that the principles of natural justice and procedural fairness are adopted at every stage of the complaints and appeals process. All formal complaints and appeals will be heard and decided on within 60 calendar days of receiving the written complaint or appeal.

If the school RTO considers more than 60 calendar days are required to process and finalise the complaint or appeal, the complainant or appellant will be informed of the reasons in writing and will be regularly updated on the progress of the matter. 

If the processes fail to resolve the complaint or appeal, a review by an independent party will be provided if requested.

Unique Student Identifier (USI) 

The Unique Student Identifier or USI is a reference number made up of 10 numbers and letters that:

  • creates a secure online record of your recognised training and qualifications gained in Australia, even from different training organisations
  • will give you access to your training records and transcripts
  • can be accessed online, anytime and anywhere
  • is free and easy to create and
  • stays with you for life

If you are a new or continuing student undertaking nationally recognised training, you need a USI in order to receive your qualification or statement of attainment. If you don't have a USI you will not receive your qualification or statement of attainment.

Your USI will give you access to an online record of the training you have done since 1 January 2015. You will also be able to produce a comprehensive transcript of your training. This can be used when applying for a job, seeking a credit transfer or demonstrating pre-requisites when undertaking further training.

In order to create a USI, you must verify your identify using one of the following forms of identification: 

  • Australian Passport 
  • Australian birth certificate 
  • Australian Driver’s Licence 
  • Medicate Card 
  • Certificate of Registration By Descent 
  • Citizenship Certificate 
  • ImmiCard 

All students are required to apply for their own USI number. Link available through student intranet or at www.usi.gov.au 

One you have created a USI number you must provide the school with a copy. Email your USI number to usi@wavellshs.eq.edu.au
