Veronicas visit alma mater for young stars program

19/06/2013
Brushing shoulders with music and political fame are Alex Rossi (Carseldine), Elisha Sum (Bracken Ridge) and Maddy Brook (Boondall) with Member for Lilley Wayne Swan and The Veronicas (Lisa and Jessica Origliasso)

The Veronicas made a special visit to their old school, Wavell State High, last week to promote the Creative Young Stars Program in the lead up to their next album launch.

The former northside twins Lisa and Jessica Origliasso are judges for the $8 million Australian Government grant program, and first round applications close this Friday, June 21.

Lisa and Jessica said they were stoked to visit their school again and be on the judging panel for the program.

"We're very excited to be supporting something that is a great platform and gives an opportunity to take creative arts more seriously," Lisa said.

Federal Member for Lilley Wayne Swan helped get The Veronicas on board with the program, as he had known them for many years and even attended their 21st birthday party.

"I've known the girls for a decade and they used to play at a lot of events (including the Lilley Australia Day Awards) and they're friends with my daughter," Mr Swan said.

The Origliasso twins joined students to sing their school song before they gave into peer and performed a couple of their originals.

Wavell State High School students then swamped The Veronicas asking questions, getting autographs and listening intently to everything they had to say.

Boondall resident Maddy Brook said it was pretty cool seeing The Veronicas and knowing they used to go to the school.

"It's Amazing, I've never met famous people before so it's pretty great to get a photo with them," she said.

Over the next two years there will be 23 Creative Young Stars grants worth $500 available to individuals and four $3,000 grants available for groups in each electorate. For details visit www.youth.gov.au
